“Circling up” to bless the food is part of every Habitat work day. Meals are provided by volunteers—this time from Oak Park United Methodist Church. A major motivator in our lives, especially for those of us who are living in empty nests, is to feel needed or of some value to our community and fellow humans. Habitat makes me feel needed.Another powerful feeling occurs when we are able to give of ourselves in return for all the blessings of life that we have received. At the same time, we become more aware of and appreciative of those blessings. Any skills we may have gained in our lives can be shared by teaching others. At the same time, we can learn new skills by hands-on experience. We are never too young or too old to learn something new. By teaching others, we empower them to better their lives while increasing their self-esteem. |
